Galaxy’s Edge Opening & Review

On Thursday, August 29th, I was able to be part of the grand opening of Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge in Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

I went later on in the morning, avoiding the madness of the people who were camped out to be the first into the park. We still needed a boarding pass to enter the land, but we only waited about an hour before our number was called. Disney introduced a new virtual queue system in order to control crowds when the land reached capacity, and I am glad they did. It was crowded, but very manageable. Towards the afternoon, boarding passes were no longer needed since the crowds thinned out.

The land itself is beautiful. Disney did not skip a beat when it came to detail. You really feel like you were transported to another planet. Here are some pics that I took so you can see just how detailed everything was.

We made stops at Savi’s Workshop, Oga’s Cantina and the Droid Depot as well. I will make separate posts for each, so that they get the reviews they deserve! But all well worth the experience and the time. If you can get a reservation, grab them! You won’t be disappointed.

We also had the chance to try the blue and green milk! Definitely an acquired taste, but I enjoyed the green milk more with tequila! You can also purchase a Bubo Wamba Family Farms souvenir mug that lights up for $24.99.

The main attraction, Smuggler’s Run, allowed most dreams to become a reality. My husband was like a little kid, being able to sit aboard the Millennium Falcon and actually fly it! Smugglers Run currently has no fast passes, so the line went super quick. We waited about 2 hours the first time, and about an hour the second. Once inside, you are within a mechanic shop where there are tons of little easter eggs and a blaster ship being repaired. Don’t forget to download the Disney Play App, where you can use your data pad to scan packages and look for other hidden messages along the queue!

Once past the workshop, you come face to face with Hondo Ohnaka, who will give you your mission before boarding the Falcon itself!

There are six spots per ride. Two pilots, two gunners, and two engineers. Each play a particular role in the ride. If you aren’t into video games and don’t enjoy being completely in control of your experience, then I can see how some could be disappointed with Smuggler’s Run. We on the other hand, had so much fun with this. From experience, if you don’t want a super bumpy ride, don’t let your kids drive! Crashing and screams will ensue.

At the end of the ride, Hondo lets you know how you did and how much damage you caused to the ship! If you downloaded the Disney Play App, your score is kept there. I unfortunately, didn’t do this because I was having connectivity issues with my phone that day.

Lastly, the best part of Galaxy’s Edge was seeing it at night. This is when I felt Batuu really came alive. Seeing everything lit up and everyone with their light sabers, it felt weird leaving and heading back to “earth”.

So have you been to Galaxy’s Edge yet? What are your thoughts? We were overall throughly impressed and cannot wait for the Rise of the Resistance to open in December.

Til the Spire!
